Jim Lee has revealed a pencil sketch of his variant cover for "Action Comics #1000" which goes on sale April 18th.
Unlike other variant covers which focus soley on the Superman character, Lee's cover features the Man of Steel battling the new alien menace Rogol Zaar who is being introduced into the comics by writer Brian Michael Bendis.
The new villain will serve as the primary antagonist in Bendis' five-issue "The Man of Steel" mini-series this June and have a backstory involving a connection to Krypton before the planet was destroyed.
With "Action Comics" speeding toward its landmark 1,000th issue on Superman’s 80th anniversary, not only will we see a series of variant covers capturing the look and feel of the Man of Steel throughout different eras of his 80-year run, but certain comic book stores will also have their own exclusive variant covers available in limited numbers.
