An original, unrestored copy of "Action Comics #1" graded at 4.0 by the CGC is currently available at auction through Heritage Auctions with an estimated value of $370,000.
The holy grail of comic books! We get excited over a copy in any grade, but this "blue label" copy ranks among the top examples we've ever offered. Ernst Gerber's The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books rated it "scarce", and CGC's census lists just 40 unrestored copies. The first appearance of Superman launched the Golden Age of Comics, and every superhero that followed is in debt to the character created by Jerry Siegel (writer) and Joe Shuster (artist). Firmly ensconced at the top of Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list, Action Comics #1 has been slowly pulling away from its primary competitor in recent years, Detective Comics #27, which introduced Batman one year later.Bidding is currently open on-line with the auction running May 10th - 12th at Heritage Auctions in Chicago, IL.
