May 4, 2010: Reeve Superman Costume Featured in New Exhibit

by Neil Cole

Christopher Reeve's Superman costume from "Superman: The Movie" will be part of "Sketch to Screen: The Art of Hollywood Costume Design", a new original exhibit featured at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

Opening May 6th, the exhibit will feature more than 65 costumes, 20 accessories and 30 original and reproduced sketches spanning America’s movie history, genres and stars.

"This exhibition will highlight our film program and be our first exhibition that looks at costume design as well as textiles as an art form. We feel certain ‘Sketch to Screen’ will appeal to a wide range of visitors," wrote Glen Gentele, museum president and chief executive.

In addition to Reeve's Superman costume which was made exclusively by a London costumer from special fabric woven in Germany, other comic book movie highlights include Hugh Jackman's Wolverine suit from "X-Men,” Warren Beatty's yellow trench coat and fedora from "Dick Tracy" and Frank Langella’s 7-foot-tall Skeletor attire from "Masters of the Universe," which has never been exhibited.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a fourteen-week Sketch to Screen Film Series that celebrates many of the greatest examples of costume design in motion pictures. Titles include films with garments represented in the exhibition, such as Gone with the Wind, Funny Face, Dick Tracy, Atonement, Public Enemies, and Mamma Mia!. Film screenings will take place in the Museum's 250-seat Noble Theater on Thursday nights at 7:30 p.m. through the duration of the exhibit.
