July 29, 2012: "Superman Ultimate Flight" Strands Riders for Two Hours
Twelve riders wound up spending nearly two hours on "Superman Ultimate Flight" at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom after the parks newest ride suffered a malfunction on Sunday.
According to witnesses, two of the cars stalled in an upright position 15 stories above the ground, the highest point of the ride.
Capt. Dan Sarna of the Vallejo, CA Fire Department stated that personel was alerted around 2:30PM that the riders were stranded on the roller coaster. Even though firefighters utilized a crane to check on the welfare of the riders, no one was actually removed from the ride. Park personnel were eventually able to bring the coaster cars back to the ground around 4PM.
"Taking people out of the coaster was the last option," Sarna said.
A park spokesperson stated that all rides are checked every morning to ensure they are running properly and no problems were found with the Superman ride when it was checked early Sunday morning.
"Superman Ultimate Flight" opened on June 30, 2012 and features the tallest inversion west of the Mississippi. At 15-stories tall, the one-of-a-kind roller coaster takes riders on a maximum speed of 62 mph over two vertical rolls and two upside-down twists.
