August 18, 2011: Malfunction Forces Closure of "Ride of Steel" Coaster for Season

The Democrat and Chronicle reports that the "Ride of Steel" roller coaster at Darien Lake Theme Park in Western New York has closed for the season after suffering a malfunction last week.

According to the article, a chain on the 208-foot tall coaster snapped on August 12th as a car was going up the lift hill. Thirty-two passengers ultimately walked back down the side of the track after being temporarily stranded on the hill.

Park officials have stated that repairs on the "Ride of Steel" will require customized parts and that the ride is expected to reopen next season.

Another incident occurred on the coaster about one month ago when U.S. Army Sgt. James Hackemer, 29, a double amputee injured in Iraq, died after being thrown from the ride on July 8th.

The "Ride of Steel" restraint system requires patrons to have two legs and the outcome of a New York Labor Department investigation blamed the accident on operator error.

The coaster was formerly known as "Superman: Ride of Steel" prior to Six Flags selling Darien Lake to PARC Management. It is one of the tallest coasters east of the Mississippi River, climbing 208 feet and reaching speeds in excess of 70 mph.
