August 21, 2013: "Superman vs. Batman" Cartoon that Almost Was

Posted by Neil Cole

While Warner Bros. Studios continues moving forward on the 2015 sequel to "Man of Steel" which will supposedly feature a showdown between Superman and Batman, today comes word of a Superman vs. Batman cartoon that almost became a reality.

In an interview with SciFiNow, "Beware The Batman" producer Mitch Watson talked different ideas his team had in the initial planning stages for the new Cartoon Network series with one featuring the two iconic characters just starting out in their respective superhero careers. Here's an excerpt from the article:

“The first version was an Escape From New York kind of thing, which was a lot of fun, but I agree it was probably too dark for where they wanted to go with the show,” says Watson.

“Then we came up with the lighter version of the show, which was Batman – specifically Bruce Wayne – and Clark Kent at the beginning of their careers. The show revolved around Clark as a cub reporter coming to Gotham City, where he meets Bruce. They’re also just becoming Batman and Superman. Clark and Bruce become friends, but Batman and Superman hate each other. Then they realise who each other is, and get on the right side and end up living in the same building.

Watson adds that while there was a feeling that studio execs really liked the idea, the timing for an animated series featuring Superman and Batman at odds with one another just didn't feel right.

"I think it would have been great, and maybe we'll get a chance to do it some day."
