September 18, 2013: Ohio 'Superman' License Plate Debuts

by Neil A. Cole

The official design for the Ohio 'Superman' license plate has been unveiled following approval on Tuesday and will be available for purchase beginning the first week of October.

The license plates were the brainchild of State Representative Bill Patmon who worked tirelessly for two years to help make the plates a reality.

The plates honor Superman co-creators and former Cleveland residents Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and feature the iconic slogan "Truth, Justice and the American Way." The phrase "Ohio: Birthplace of Superman" was to have originally been featured on the plates but DC Comics and its parent company Time Warner objected to the term.

The plates will cost $20 each in addition to the typical registration fee of $34.50 plus local taxes. A portion of the $20 will go to the Siegel and Shuster Society. Ohio residents wishing to replace their standard plate with a Superman plate can do so by paying the $20 fee as well as a plate replacement fee of $11.75 and a $4.50 replacement sticker fee.

Unfortunately, a Bureau of Motor Vehicles spokesperson has stated that individuals from out of state will be ineligible to purchase the special Superman license plates.
