September 27, 2013: James Caan Talks Almost Being Cast as Superman

Posted by Neil Cole

During the course of a recent appearance on the 'Howard Stern Show', actor James Caan talked about being offered the role of the Man of Steel in the 1978 blockbuster film, "Superman - The Movie".

Caan explained that Marlon Brando, who he had worked together with on "The Godfather," practically begged him to take the role. Ultimately, Caan turned down the opportunity because he felt it wasn't for him, especially since he would have to wear the iconic suit and sign on for two installments.

Cann went on to state that the original script for the film, by "The Godfather" scribe Mario Puzo, had a much more humorous feel to it and offerred the following description of one such scene:

"Clark Kent is just devastated cause [Lois Lane] is so in love with Superman. Physically the office is setup in the [Daily Planet]... In order to get to Clark Kent's office you must pass through Lois Lane's office. So, one day Clark is so pissed off that she is in love with Superman, he says, 'screw it.' And he rips his clothes off and he's got his Superman [costume] on under there. And he says, 'Lois, come in here!' She comes in and looks at him, 'That's sweet Clark, but you're no Superman.' And she walks out."

Caan's most recent project is "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2" in which he provides the voice of Tim Lockwood, the father of the film's lead character Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader).
