The town of Woolstock, Iowa held an official unveiling ceremony this past weekend for their new welcome sign which recognizes the town as being the birthplace of actor George Reeves.
The sign also features Woolstock's motto, "The Friendly Town" along with a photo of the late "Adventures of Superman" star and the epitaph, "Humanitarian, Veteran, Actor".
The unveiling event was attended by Woolstock residents and visitors including sign designer, Ray Kinnetz and his wife; owners of the George Reeves birthplace property, the Ratcliff; former GRM chairperson, Robin Hamer; Mayor, Conrad Grunwald; City Clerk and sign project liason, Pam Gearhart; Wright County District 3 Supervisor, Karl Helgevold; State House Representative Terry Baxter; and Guest Speaker and Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Deb Brown.
In addition to the new welcome sign, the residents of Woolstock have celebrated Reeves' life over the years with such events as a Memorial Festival in both 2006 & 2007 and a 100th birthday celebration which featured various events taking place from January through June of 2014.
Sadly, attempts to raise funds to restore Reeves' former residence in Woolstock to its original condition did not succeed and the regrettable decision was ultimately made to demolish the home in 2011 due to safety issues.
