Alfred Gough Offers Troubling Update on Animated "Smallville" Revival

Posted on March 24, 2025 by Neil Cole

In a recent appearance on the Talk Ville podcast, Alfred Gough, co-creator of the beloved "Smallville" series, shared a troubling update regarding the much-anticipated animated revival of the hit Superman prequel series. Fans have been eagerly awaiting news of the sequel since it was first announced in 2021, but Gough's comments indicate that the future of the project remains uncertain, largely due to recent changes at Warner Bros. and DC.

The animated sequel series, which has garnered significant fan excitement, has seen "Smallville" stars Tom Welling (Clark Kent) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) working alongside Gough and his co-creator, Miles Millar, to bring the iconic show back to life in animated form. However, Gough's latest remarks suggest that the ambitious project has faced substantial delays.

During his appearance on the Talk Ville podcast, where he was joined by Welling and Rosenbaum, Gough explained the difficulties in moving forward with the project. "That is the thing, I think the problem with most projects in development in any studio and/or any network is regime change," he stated. "Warners has obviously gone through a lot, and I think the fact that they are in the process of rebooting Superman again, kind of unfortunately, I think, keeps our thing off the table for a bit."

Despite the setback, Gough maintained a hopeful outlook for the future of the Smallville animated revival. "Everything comes around in one form or another," he said optimistically. "I just read the other day that they are rebooting Buffy for Hulu."

The uncertainty surrounding the "Smallville" animated revival stems from the ongoing changes at Warner Bros. and DC, including the highly publicized reboot of Superman. This reboot has led to some speculation that any projects related to the earlier iterations of the Superman mythos, including the Smallville animated series, may be put on hold indefinitely.

While fans may have to wait longer than anticipated for the animated sequel series, Gough's words offer a glimmer of hope that the revival could still come to fruition in the future.
