A portfolio of 10 screenprints by legendary artist Andy Warhol entitled "Myths and The Shadow" are currently available at auction as part of the "Prints & Multiples Signature Auction" hosted by Heritage Auctions.
Most powerful among the Myths portfolio is the iconic image of Superman. Warhol's Superman is a powerful figure whose movement is amplified by his dynamic silhouette. Mild mannered Clark Kent's transformation to Superman was particularly appealing to children, like Warhol, who were anxious and insecure. Warhol created several iterations of Superman throughout his career; the Myths version was one of the last. Superman's dichotomy of outward vs. inward persona was a theme that resonated with Warhol, who struggled with his identity throughout his life.
In addition to Superman, the Myths series also features such characters as Mickey Mouse, the Wicked Witch of the West, Santa Claus, and Dracula. The series embodies Warhol's ability to marry American popular culture into powerful screen-printed images that capture his personality in these beloved characters from our childhood. Each print in the celebrated series can be interpreted as a portrait of Warhol's own personal America.
Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. For more information, please visit Heritage Auctions.
