Exclusive Interview with Actor George Newbern

Posted on July 05, 2023 by Neil Cole

The Superman Super Site recently had the opportunity to speak with actor George Newbern who is best known among Superman fans for his role as Superman/Clark Kent in the "Justice League" and "Justice League Unlimited" animated series.

In the following interview, Newbern talks about voicing the role of the Man of Steel as well as his acting career and his roles in such films as "Adventures in Babysitting" and the "Father of the Bride" trilogy.

Superman Super Site:
One of your earliest acting roles was in the 1987 comedy "Adventures in Babysitting" in which you starred opposite Elisabeth Shue. What projects were you involved with prior to this casting?
Newbern:
Elizabeth and I did a TV movie called "Double Switch" for Disney just prior to "Adventures in Babysitting"... [it was] a blast!

Superman Super Site:
You are well known for your role as Superman in the "Justice League" and "Justice League Unlimited" animated series. How did you find out about the casting call for the role and what steps did you take in putting your own unique stamp on your portrayal?
Newbern:
Actually, I didn't know anything about the audition other than it was for an animation project. And I had no idea it was to replace Tim Daly.... But 20 years later I'm shocked to still be associated with it. I consciously didn't try to imitate or think about any other portrayals of superman. My own, was really channeling my older brother who was an Eagle Scout. He's a lot more like Superman than I am for sure.

Superman Super Site:
Looking back, what are your favorite episodes from "Justice League" and/or "Justice League Unlimited" and why?
Newbern:
I love the Christmas episode ("Comfort and Joy") and "For the Man Who Has Everything" and "This Little Piggy". I love these because they have so much humanity.

Superman Super Site:
You are also well known for your role as Bryan MacKenzie in "Father of the Bride", "Father of the Bride: Part II" and, more recently, "Father of the Bride, Part 3(ish)". What are some of your fondest memories from this role and starring alongside such iconic comedy legends as Steve Martin and Martin Short?
Newbern:
It was a surreal experience, but unbelievably COOL and such a blast to get to work with such incredibly talented icons.

Superman Super Site:
You were a guest at the 44th Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL in June, 2022. What was it like meeting all the fans and visiting the "Official Hometown of Superman" for the first time?
Newbern:
I loved seeing the museum and all the historical artifacts that this family has collected over the years for Superman. I learned a whole bunch of stuff and was in awe by the responsibility of getting to play Superman.

Superman Super Site:
In addition to "Justice League" and the "Father of the Bride" films, your career has spanned numerous roles in film, television, animation, and video games. What have been some of your all-time favorite roles and projects to work on?
Newbern:
One of my favorite jobs was working on "Scandal" for ABC for seven years - incredible writing and incredible cast.

Superman Super Site:
You recently returned to voice the role of Superman in the crossover fighting game, "MultiVersus" which has a full launch scheduled for an early 2024. What other projects do you currently have on the horizon?
Newbern:
Hopefully something soon!
