In a recent interview with Collider, actor Frank Grillo shared his excitement about his upcoming role as Rick Flag Sr. in the animated "Creature Commandos" series as well as director James Gunn's "Superman". Grillo was eager to discuss his journey with the superhero genre, and how his personal history with iconic characters like Superman made this opportunity feel especially unique.
"I wasn't a superhero kid," stated Grillo. "I wasn't a comic book kid, but the one superhero - and I'm talking about from the TV show, the original TV show - was Superman. To me, he's the ultimate and only superhero, second to maybe no one, and a long distance from that is Batman, right? Those are the two superheroes I grew up with."
This childhood connection to Superman, particularly the character's portrayal in the original TV show, made Grillo's experience on the set of "Superman" even more meaningful. When the opportunity to join this upcoming project arose, Grillo was thrilled to be a part of it. His excitement was palpable as he described stepping onto set, knowing that James Gunn was at the helm. Grillo explained, "But to step on set and to know Gunn was at the helm, even in the capacity that I was working, was a gift."
Grillo went on to reveal that he recently had the opporunity to see a preview of the upcoming trailer for "Superman" stating, "I got a sneak peek at a little bit of the trailer, and I'm not joking, and I'm not blowing this out of proportion, my skin was hot and I had goosebumps. That's how great it is."
With "Superman" marking a new era for the Man of Steel, one of the most significant changes is the casting of David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel/Clark Kent. Grillo, ever the supporter, had nothing but praise for the actor, who is set to take on the iconic role. While some fans remain skeptical about the casting choice, Grillo is confident that Corenswet is poised for greatness.
"By the way, this kid, David [Corenswet], is going to be a superstar. A superstar," Grillo declared. "He's amazing, as is the rest of the cast in the film, and just James' take on it. I think it's gonna be the movie."
"Superman" is currently scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
