On Saturday, February 22, 2025, the MSU Library in East Lansing, MI, will host a special free screening of the recently released documentary "Selling Superman". This captivating documentary follows a Michigan family as they uncover a comic collection of historical significance, focusing on the unexpected impact it has on their lives.
The screening, which will take place from 1:00pm - 5:30pm, is a unique opportunity to experience all four episodes of the documentary in one sitting. The event will be held in the MSU Library which is renowned for housing the world's largest publicly accessible comic book collection - a perfect setting for this story that celebrates comic book history.
Directed by Adam Schomer, "Selling Superman" tells the tale of Darren Watts, a man who inherits the keys to a treasure trove of 300,000 comics, including an original copy of "Superman #1". The documentary chronicles the emotional journey of the family as they wrestle with a 40-year-old painful secret, ultimately leading Darren to make a life-altering decision to sell one of the most expensive comics in the world.
The event will be a viewing of all four episodes in the documentary with seating beginning at 12:30pm. There will be a 30-minute catered intermission between episodes 3 and 4 followed by a brief Q&A session post viewing with Darren and several others from the documentary.
This event is an excellent opportunity to dive deep into the world of comic book culture, the impact of rare collections, and the personal legacy of those who preserve and sell them.
