A popular 20-foot-tall No. 2 pencil sculpture located on the lawn of a historic home in the Lake of the Isles area of Minneapolis, Minnesota has been dressed as Superman for the Halloween season complete with the iconic red & blue costume, flowing red cape, and Clark Kent's glasses.
"At first the pencil thought he would be shy to have the costume on standing on the front lawn, but now he loves it and is having so much fun with all the people stopping to take pictures," stated property owner, John Higgins in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune. "On the weekends, we put a speaker outside and a few times as people walk by we play R.E.M.'s song 'Superman.'"
The sculpture was created from the base of a massive 180-year-old bur oak that was partially destroyed in May, 2017 when a sudden and violent windstorm swept through the area. Higgins along with his wife Amy commissioned artist Curtis Ingvoldstad of Big Woods Sculpture to carve the sculpture which receives a sharpening every year during a community event on the first Saturday in June.
"The pencil has a personality, and likes to do stuff regular people do - enjoy sunsets, pose for pictures with people, etc.," added Higgins. "The pencil wanted to put on a costume for Halloween and hopes to go trick-or-treating."
The pencil sculture is located at 2217 E. Lake of the Isles Parkway in Minneapolis, MN and will continue to don it's Superman costume through the first few days of November.
