Metropolis, IL Superman Statue Reveals New Paint Job

Phase one of the renovations to the iconic Superman statue in Metropolis, IL have been completed which consisted of the removal of several layers of paint and the application of new paint which is rated to last between 20 to 25 years

Over the past week, West Ky. Painting, LLC of Paducah, KY blasted the statue with glass beads to safely remove all the existing paint down to the original bronze base. Following the removal, Blackhound, LLC of Lawrenceville, GA placed tarps around the statue in order to apply the statue's stunning new paint job which was unveiled earlier today.

The statue was officially unveiled on June 5, 1993 following fundraising efforts which ultimately raised over $100,000 and stands proudly in full color in front of the Metropolis Courthouse building on Superman Square. Since that time, the Hambrick family who own and operate the world famous Super Museum had repainted the statue many times over the years.

Beginning in Spring, 2021, phases two and three of the renovations will begin which include improvements to the Superman shield base surrounding the statue as well as painting of the railings, mortar repairs, reapplication of shadowing on existing memorial bricks, and the placement of up to 700 new memorial bricks currently be offered for purchase by the Metropolis Chamber of Commerce to help fund the project.

A rededication ceremony is scheduled to take place during the annual Superman Celebration in June, 2021.
