On a recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", actor Nicholas Hoult opened up about his highly anticipated role as Lex Luthor in the upcoming "Superman" movie from director James Gunn.
Kimmel, who admitted he had pictured Hoult more in the role of Superman than the arch-nemesis Lex Luthor, prompted a fascinating discussion about Hoult's take on the character. Hoult revealed that while he had previously tested for the role of Superman, he ultimately embraced the opportunity to play the complex and formidable Luthor. "Apparently not," Hoult joked in response to Kimmel's comment, adding that he had a lot of fun stepping into Luthor’s shoes. "He's a great character, and James [Gunn] is such a wonderful filmmaker. He's got such a great take on that character and the whole world he’s created. It's special. I can't wait to see it," Hoult said, speaking with genuine enthusiasm about the film.
As for what kind of Lex Luthor audiences can expect to see, Hoult shared some intriguing details. He emphasized that he wants Luthor to feel "dangerous," with Gunn describing the character as "imposing." However, Hoult noted that he has yet to see the finished product, so he is just as curious as fans to see how it all comes together on screen.
The iconic villain has been portrayed by several great actors in both film and television over the years, including Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg. Hoult acknowledged this rich legacy, revealing that he has studied their performances in preparation for his own portrayal. "I've seen all the previous Lexes, and there’s so many great qualities to what all those actors did," Hoult explained. "Whenever you're playing a character that's been played before you, you're kind of standing on the shoulders of all those actors."
In additon to Hoult's role as lex Luthor, the film which was previously know as "Superman: Legacy", stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent.
"Superman" is currently scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
