Rachel Brosnahan Talks "Superman" Stating "This Is Not an Origin Story"

Rachel Brosnahan recently shared her excitement about starring in the role of Lois Lane in the highly anticipated film, "Superman" and the fresh approach James Gunn is bringing to the iconic superhero's story. In a conversation with Collider's Steve Weintraub, Brosnahan revealed how Gunn's unconventional direction for the film is breaking from tradition and offering a new perspective on Superman and Lois Lane.

One of the most notable departures from past iterations is that "Superman" does not revisit the familiar origin story. Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane, expressed her enthusiasm for this new direction, stating, "I also love that this is not an origin story. We've seen the origin story done so well a number of different times, but we come into a world that already exists - Lois and Clark are working at the Daily Planet, monsters exist in Metropolis, Lex Luthor has LuthorCorp. We drop in at this point in their relationship that I've never seen before."

In "Superman", the iconic couple is already several months into their relationship, offering a fresh take on their dynamic. Brosnahan elaborated on the nuances of Lois and Clark's bond, saying, "They've been together for about three months. And they're asking some questions about the future of their relationship. They're not sure if this is something that was just a really great fling or something that could be forever, and they have really opposite worldviews, and they bump up against each other that way. So, it was a really fun way into a familiar story."

Brosnahan also shared a memorable experience from the set, recalling that her first scene with David Corenswet (who plays Clark Kent) was a significant one. "My first day of shooting was actually this 10-page-long scene with David that we auditioned with, and so we shot it for two days," she said. "To be able to do that just laid this foundation for us and these characters that we got to carry through the rest of the film."

The actress praised Gunn's direction, calling him "very capable" and highlighting the clarity and creative confidence he brought to the set. "James has such a clear vision for this," Brosnahan said. "And we all just fell into his very capable hands."

At CinemaCon, new details about "Superman" were unveiled, giving fans a glimpse into the film's plot and characters. Brosnahan expressed her relief, admitting, "Well, now I feel I can say a little bit more because James really busted it wide open in CinemaCon. David and I have been trying not to say so many things for weeks leading up, and James just laid it all out."

"Superman" is currently scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
