It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jim Hambrick, a true Superman enthusiast and the founder of the iconic Superman Museum in Metropolis, Illinois. Jim passed away at the age of 70 on December 22, 2024, at 1:44am surrounded by his loving family. Hambrick, known affectionately as the "Keeper of Superman", leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire fans of the Man of Steel for generations to come. He was not only a passionate collector of Superman memorabilia but also a dear friend to all who shared his love for the legendary hero.
My wife and I first met Jim in 2005, during our very first visit to Metropolis, the city that proudly claims the title of "Home of Superman." What began as a day trip to visit the museum and immerse ourselves in the town's unique charm quickly grew into a meaningful friendship. We were welcomed into Jim's world with open arms, where Superman was more than just a comic book character; he was a lifelong passion. Over the years, Jim's warmth and enthusiasm would draw us in, and we would go on to enjoy countless conversations, both on the phone and in person, about all things Superman.
In 2008, we began making a yearly trip to Metropolis for the annual Superman Celebration where Jim was always a constant presence. His museum, a treasure trove of Superman history, is a highlight for visitors, filled with artifacts, memorabilia, and rare collectibles that chronicle the evolution of Superman from his debut in 1938 to the present day. But Jim's passion for Superman went beyond the items on display. He understood what the character stood for - truth, justice, and the American way - and he shared that message with every visitor who walked through the doors of the museum.
His personal collection was a testament to his deep connection to the world of Superman. Whether it was original artwork, vintage comics, or even rare film props, Jim's collection was a reflection of his lifelong dedication to preserving the history of the iconic superhero. But what truly set Jim apart was his ability to make fans feel like family. He was always willing to share his vast knowledge, answer questions, and offer insights into Superman's rich history. For Jim, Superman was more than just a hobby - it was a way of life.
Throughout our many visits to Metropolis, Jim became more than just a fellow Superman enthusiast; he became a friend. He was someone who shared our excitement for all things related to the Man of Steel and whose love for the character was contagious. His passion was evident in everything he did, from curating the exhibits in his museum to engaging with fans young and old. Jim's enthusiasm for Superman never waned, and his commitment to preserving the legacy of this beloved hero was unwavering.
Jim's passing marks the end of an era for the Superman community, but his legacy will live on through the countless fans whose lives he touched. The museum itself stands as a lasting tribute to his love for Superman and his dedication to sharing that love with the world. Jim's spirit will continue to be a part of Metropolis, and his memory will forever be intertwined with the Superman Celebration that he helped shape and grow.
As we reflect on Jim's life, we are reminded of the impact that one person can have on a community. Jim was more than just the founder of the Superman Museum; he was the heart and soul of Metropolis, a friend to all who shared his love for Superman, and a passionate advocate for the values the Man of Steel represents. Our hearts are heavy with his passing, but we take comfort in knowing that Jim's legacy will continue to inspire fans and friends for many years to come.
Rest in peace, Jim. You will be missed, but your love for Superman and your unwavering friendship will never be forgotten.
