A resident in Havelock, Nebraska recently had the trunk of a dying tree in his front yard carved into a 7-foot-tall Superman statue.
"I knew even when I had to cut it down that I wanted something in the trunk of it so I had them eave like a 7 foot piece," stated homeowner Jason Thompson. "I've always been a huge superman fan and so I thought well what better than a superman statue."
Thompson reached out to various artists within the local area in regard to his idea but each one turned him down stating that the task of creating a human statue out of the tree trunk was too difficult.
Not to be discouraged, Thompson continued his search for an artist and ulitmately found UNL Architecture student David Huismann who immediately responded to his request and began the task of carving the Man of Steel.
"Well I said I could do it that's for sure, I've never done a human figure before so the hardest part was getting the proportions right," stated Huismann. "But once I got that figured out, it was just a bunch of carving a slashing away".
Due to his schedule as a full-time student, Huismann could only work on the carving in his spare time which resulted in the Superman statue taking about a year to finish. However, Huismann says it was all worth it and he hopes to eventually incorporate his carving skills into his architecture career.
