"Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story," directed by Ian Bonhóte and Peter Ettedgui, has won the prestigious Best Documentary award at the 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs). The award was presented during a star-studded ceremony held on Sunday, February 16th, 2025, at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
The documentary chronicles the life of the iconic actor, chronicling both his personal and professional journey before and after the life-changing horseback riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down. Through a deeply moving and introspective narrative, the film takes audiences behind the scenes, weaving together never-before-seen, intimate home movies and an extraordinary trove of personal archival material. "Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story" features the first-ever extended interviews filmed with Reeve's children, offering a heartfelt and personal look at the Reeve family's journey.
Additionally, the documentary includes poignant insights from Reeve's brother, his first wife Gae Exton, and Hollywood colleagues and friends including Glenn Close, Jeff Daniels, Whoopi Goldberg, and former Secretary of State John Kerry. Special attention is also given to the extraordinary bond between Reeve and his best friend and Juilliard classmate, Robin Williams. Archival footage reveals the touching moments between Reeve and Williams, who, along with his wife Dana, was an unwavering source of support for Reeve and his family.
