After four seasons of action-packed storytelling, heartfelt moments, and deeply human struggles, "Superman & Lois" has come to an end. The series finale, "It Went by So Fast", aired last night on The CW and brought a long-running saga to a touching conclusion, leaving fans reflecting on the journey of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and their family. As the series bids farewell, showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher recently sat down with CBR to discuss how they crafted the emotional ending and what it meant to close out the Kent family's chapter.
"You've got two endings that you've got to land," stated Fletcher. "You've got the story for the season, and we knew what we were doing there pretty early. For the story for the series, Todd and I talked at the end of Season 3 about something we liked a lot. We had to retrofit it a little bit, but we wanted to take a swing with the ending of the series, and had a vision for it. I think it would've been similar regardless. We knew that we had an opportunity to do it, and we wanted to do this one certain thing with it, which we thought was really interesting, and we were able to do it. We're grateful for that."
Helbing and Fletcher also discussed Superman's death at the start of the season and his resurrection through General Sam Lane's sacrifice which not only marked a turning point for the Man of Steel but also contributed to a more humanized portrayal of the character.
"We had a lot of those conversations -- we put ourselves into a corner and figure out how to get out of them," said Helbing. "Ultimately, it's what is the most human version of a story that we can do. With Sam, he, Lois and Clark had a fraught relationship, and it got better over the seasons, and then he makes the ultimate sacrifice, and then it becomes a transplant story in a lot of ways, and you see the effects of that."
"We treated the death of Superman in a couple of different ways, because we knew that the audience would go 'Oh, it's this'," added Fletcher. "But when you watch it in totality, it's more than that. You don't really know, until the very last frame, what it really is. It goes from a dark version of the death of Superman to an inspiring one, hopefully -- a cry through the joy of it. That's life sometimes and that's what we intended."
The finale ends with an emotionally charged conclusion that features a montage narrated by Tyler Hoechlin as Clark that captures the fates of the extended cast. The sequence is not just a farewell to the characters but a reflection of the years-long journey they had all undertaken.
"The arc of the season was about him becoming human and relying on all these people," stated Fletcher. "Just to see a human end to an alien and that it all mattered, to show the reflection of love and connection throughout his life. It's a life a lot like you and I share, it's just that he has so much greatness in it."
"I think that it's a testament to the character and what he stands for," added Helbing. "It felt like a really great way to tee up that montage, to see what he did with the rest of his time. Like Brent was saying, ultimately, what the show is about, and what he's about, is family."
As the final credits rolled, viewers were reminded that while the series may have ended, the impact of "Superman & Lois" - and its heroes - would continue to resonate, much like the legacy of Superman himself.
