Two original, unrestored copies of "Superman #1" from the Palos Verdes Collection are currently available through Heritage Auctions which offers the following description of each vintage comic book:
Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Cream to off-white pages. Unrestored copies of this major key are very difficult to come by, and we have yet to offer an unrestored copy with a grade higher than VG/FN 5.0.
This was the first time an entire comic was devoted to a single superhero. It arrived on newsstands barely a year after the Man of Steel's first appearance in Action Comics #1, to support his meteoric rise in popularity. Superman #1 is currently ranked an impressive #3 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list, and the cover, by co-creator Joe Shuster, is one of the most recognizable in the history of the medium.
One reason that unrestored copies are so scarce is due to the back cover pinup of Superman (featuring a handy dotted line that no doubt encouraged kids to take their scissors to it) as well as the wartime paper drives that claimed most of the other comics of that era.Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC Qualified FR 1.0 Off-white to white pages. Origin of Superman. Joe Shuster cover, story art, and back cover pin-up. Currently #3 on Overstreet's list of Top 100 Golden Age Comics. CGC notes, "Cover and centerfold married. (Spine of cover completely split and cover detached.)"
Both auctions are scheduled to end on Thursday, May 12, 2022. As of this writing, the current respective bids are $210,000 and $26,000 with no reserve price set for either copy.
