Warner Bros. CEO Calls James Gunn's "Superman" a "Five-Star Movie" in Early Praise

In a recent interview with Deadline.com, Warner Bros. Pictures Co-Chairman and CEO Mike De Luca offered glowing praise for the upcoming "Superman" film, directed by James Gunn, describing the highly anticipated reboot as a "five-star movie" that left him deeply moved.
"I love Superman. I think James Gunn has crushed it," stated De Luca. "It's got tons of his trademark heart and humor and the action is jaw dropping. It's the Superman I grew up with, so I get choked up when I watch it."
De Luca emphasized the film's emotional resonance, visual scale, and authenticity, citing it as a project that both honors the legacy of the Man of Steel and boldly reimagines it for a new generation. When asked about comparisons to Richard Donner's beloved "Superman: The Movie" starring Christopher Reeve, De Luca acknowledged spiritual parallels while noting the film's distinctive vision.
"I would say in spirit, it is closer to that, but it’s also a big hunk of epic sci-fi," he explained. "It has a little bit of what I loved about Guardians of the Galaxy, but it's true-blue Superman."
The film reportedly draws inspiration from acclaimed comic arcs, including "All-Star Superman", which Gunn has referenced as a major influence. De Luca described the film as "a love letter to what has made Superman endure for almost a hundred years."
With De Luca's heartfelt endorsement, anticipation continues to build for the new chapter in the Superman legacy. James Gunn, known for his unique blend of humor, emotion, and genre spectacle, steps into the DC Universe's most iconic cape with what Warner Bros. sees as a landmark cinematic event.
"Superman" will soar into theaters and IMAX nationwide on July 11, 2025, with international release beginning July 9, 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
