Warner Bros. Pictures Chairman, Toby Emmerich recently talked about the studio's plans for future films set within the DC extended universe following the overwhelming success of "The Batman" at the box office.
Speaking with Deadline, Emmerich stated that more DCEU movies will follow the same standalone formula of the film with the studio prioritizing quality over everything else.
"The secret of the movie business is quality," said Emmerich. "It's the best business strategy for both theatrical motion pictures and superhero movies. The movies don't have to all have the same tone, or interlock with other DC movies, or have an Easter egg that sets up another film. Quality is the most important factor for a studio, and the biggest thing you can do to influence quality is the filmmaker that you hire."
In addtion to "The Batman", this standalone formula also resulted in the crtical and financial success of 2019's "Joker" which was also set within it's own universe with no connections to other films within the DCEU.
This new universe established in "The Batman" will continue to evolve with the development of two new series on HBO Max which will be centered on the Gotham City Police Department and Colin Farrell's character of Penguin as well as plans for multiple sequels to the film itself scheduled for future release.
It will be interesting to see how much this new formula plays into the storylines of such upcoming films as "Black Adam" and "The Flash" which have ties to the existing DCEU universe with the latter crossing over into the universe of 1989's "Batman" with Michael Keaton reprising his role of the Dark Knight.
For now, this new strategy seems to be working for WB and DC Films with resounding commercial and critical success and content that stands apart from the competition.
